Totally Vulgar – Live at Tuska Open Air 2013
TLDR: Old-school Finnish death metal gone live. No gimmicks.
Review: Abhorrence is a name that is shared among a few bands, but of course this one is the one and original from Finland. The same that eventually gave birth to Amorphis.
Abhorrence’s career was cut short in around late 80’s and early 90’s, and they never got to do a full album. Thus their legacy was mostly compiled in 1990 demo Vulgar Necrolatry and self-titled ep. It took no less than 21 years before the bones got dug up and Completely Vulgar compilation was put out. The following year the band got up on stage and their Tuska Open Air 2013 apperance was also recorded. This nine songs live album now celebrate band’s comeback, whatever it means.
Totally Vulgar – Live at Tuska Open Air 2013 is a tricky one. On the other hand it’s a great way to get to know this legend. Then again it’s also no less than recycling old material in live format. Thus, if you already have these songs in your collection, there are very few reasons to get this one there, too. For younger generation this is a great way to check this band out, because the stuff is actually quite good.
No matter if this stuff is nowadays far from original, since it’s all about old-school death metal that was done during the years there was no such thing as “old-school death metal”. This one is more or less one of the pioneers of Finnish death metal, to say the least and thus it has clearly earned its release. Musically Abhorrence is still very up-to-date stuff and any resemblance to Bolt Thrower is nothing but a big plus.
Even though this is a open air festival recording, the sounds are quite good. There isn’t anything special, though, just some live shouts and the usual shit you’d expect froma a live recording. With all its minor faults, this one is a pretty solid release in the genre. For old-school death metal lovers a sort of must-hear one.
